Ulysses Dove choreographed this solo for Judith Jamison, who was at the height of her powers as a performer at the time. The ballet, a reflection on the abrupt swings of emotion of a person in love, is composed of five sections: “Fear,” “Anger,” “I've Been Hurt Before,” “Getting It All Out,” and “Ready for Love.” The original version included poetry written by Robert Maurice Riley, but much to the disappointment of the poet, Dove eventually cut the poetry.
