Sabar, a vibrant and energetic dance form that originated from the Wolof people, is the national dance of Senegal and a form of expression within the Senegalese community. The technique involves rhythmic movements of the body accompanied by the beats of the Sabar drums.

Class begins with a warm-up to stretch and prepare participants’ bodies, followed by instruction on basic rhythm and terminology of the technique before moving into choreography set to live Sabar drumming.

Sabar classes are taught barefoot. Dancers should wear loose-fitting, comfortable dance clothes or a lapa (wrap skirt) if you own one.

Our classes are defined by the following so you can determine which level is best for you.

  • Absolute Beginner (ABS BEG): for students with little to no prior experience or knowledge of the technique.
  • Beginner (BEG): for students with a basic understanding of the fundamentals and foundations of the technique.
  • Advanced Beginner (ADV BEG): for students with prior experience and a more comprehensive understanding of the technique and vocabulary.
  • Intermediate/Advanced (INT/ADV): for students with extensive training and an expansive knowledge of the technique and its proper alignment.
  • Open: for students of any level.
